The IMB Bank Community Foundation has been supporting local initiatives in the communities the customer-owned bank serves since 1999.
Now in its 25th anniversary year, the Foundation recently announced funding for another 58 diverse community projects. This brings the total number of grassroots initiatives supported to over 1,000 with more than $12m pledged in grant funding.
IMB Bank CEO Robert Ryan reveals the story behind this remarkable achievement and what the future holds for the Foundation.
Creating a positive impact
The idea was born out of a genuine desire to give back to local community groups and charity organisations.
“Looking back 25 years, we recognised that our success was built on the trust and loyalty of our local communities. Creating the IMB Community Foundation wasn’t just about corporate social responsibility – it was about creating tangible impact in places where our members lived and worked,” Robert said.
“While it helped differentiate us from the big banks, more importantly, it gave us a structured way to reinvest in local initiatives that mattered to our members. 25 years on, with $12m in funding and over 1,000 community projects supported, the Foundation’s impact on countless lives has proven it to be one of our best initiatives,” he added.
Powerful ripple effect
The Foundation supports community initiatives across six broad categories: social, educational, community development, environmental, cultural and community connection. By supporting organisations dedicated to doing good, these grants catalyse positive change that resonates throughout the community.
This impact is exemplified by the Foundation’s long-term partnership with the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.
“Over 14 years, our $535,000 investment has enabled vital heart health screenings for nearly 9,000 people across NSW, ACT, and Victoria, with a particular focus on underserved rural and regional areas. The program’s impact is profound – approximately 50% of those tested were referred for further medical attention, potentially preventing countless heart attacks and strokes through early detection,” Robert explained.
On a smaller scale, IMB’s support of ‘Frame Running’ – a program that enriches the lives of children with a disability – shows how community grants can help small organisations grow and thrive.
“What began with funding for three running frames and a handful of participants has grown into a thriving para-sport community with over 35 participants. Today, it’s not just about the equipment – it’s about building confidence, fitness and social connections for these participants,” Robert said.
“These initiatives demonstrate how our Foundation’s sustained support allows grassroots projects to grow into programs with significant, measurable community impact. Whether it’s enabling access to vital health screenings, or creating inclusive sporting opportunities, each investment builds stronger, safer, and more connected communities,” he added.
Team work in driving positive change
A key part of the Foundation’s success is the IMB team. They are passionate about making a difference in their local areas, and play a crucial role in connecting IMB with deserving organisations.
“Our branch teams are at the heart of promoting the Foundation in their local communities. They know their localities best and actively encourage eligible groups to apply for funding,” Robert explained.
IMB further strengthens this connection by involving its Board, Executive, and branch management in the interview process of grant applicants.
“This helps build genuine community connection right through all levels of our organisation. We also have some staff that volunteer with recipient organisations which demonstrates their hands-on commitment that goes beyond just providing funds,” he said.
Future goals and plans
IMB Bank is committed to driving positive change in the communities it serves, and that commitment is reflected in the Foundation’s ambitious plans for the future.
“Looking ahead, we’re recommitting our financial support for local changemakers and grassroots community groups and their projects. Our focus remains clear: social empowerment and inclusion, environmental sustainability, cultural preservation, educational advancement, community development, and fostering meaningful connections. Whether it’s mentoring young people, supporting environmental initiatives, preserving local heritage, helping individuals build new skills, or bringing communities together – we’re backing projects that create lasting positive impact,” Robert explained.
“This isn’t just about funding; it’s about helping build better, brighter, and more connected communities for the future,” he added.
