How to enjoy the holiday season on a budget

For many Australian families, the summer holidays are a time to enjoy some much-deserved downtime after a busy year. However, when the cost of living is rising, this typically expensive time of year can create additional stress, as we try to balance the expense of activities, travel and catch-ups with more-essential household costs.

With that in mind, we’ve come up with a list of ideas that may lower the cost of the holiday season, without removing the seasonal joy.

To save on accommodation

  1. Think about a house-swap: Ask friends or family members whether they’d like a change of scenery or consider using Facebook community groups to find someone who will do a temporary trade.
  2. Consider a staycation: With lots of families on the move, many major cities and regional centres become a bit quieter over the summer holidays. Think about taking advantage of the free or cheap activities your local area has to offer.
  3. Offer to care for pets: Some last-minute travellers still haven’t found someone to look after their furry friends. Consider signing up to a house-sitting website.
  4. Go camping: While many campsites are starting to fill up, you may be able to add yourself to a cancellation list or find a less popular site for a cheaper holiday.
  5. Share the costs with a group: You may be able to save by staying with friends in a larger property and splitting the costs.
  6. Go off-season: If you can delay your holiday, consider another time of year, where tourist demand isn’t as high.

To save on activities and events

  1. Find the best free options at your destination: Depending on where you’re travelling, the local tourist board will most likely have a list of free activities, such as walks, swimming spots, museums and scenic sites.
  2. Check out the library: Whether you’re holidaying at home or somewhere else, the library is a safe bet to have free activities on offer for kids and adults alike.
  3. Look for discounts: Dining venues often have daily and weekly specials. You may also be able to find coupons to save on tours through the local tourist office.

To save on transport

  1. Opt for public transport: If you can, look for buses or trains to get to your destination of choice. With fuel costs still rising, using a car this summer is likely to be one of the most expensive ways of getting around.
  2. Carpool with friends: If you can’t use public transport, try to find others to travel with to share the fuel costs. Company and road-trip conversations are an added benefit.
